Maria Elena arrived in the United States a little over a year ago with her son Ezequiel. They were fleeing gangs in Honduras, where Ezequiel was being actively recruited. VIAA connected with them days before they crossed the border and have been helping Maria Elena apply for asylum and adapt to life on Long Island ever since. This has been made immeasurably more difficult by the fact that they are confronting the same gangs on Long Island that they fled in Honduras.
